Breed Spotlight-Border Collie

The highly energized Border Collie has been around for 100 years, yet was only recognized by the AKC beginning in 1995.  Border Collies belong to the AKC Herding Group as their original purpose was to herd livestock, specifically sheep, in the border country of Scotland and England.

While many of today’s border collies do not herd livestock, they still possess that instinct and drive.  Measuring 18-22 inches tall and weighing in at approximately 35-45 pounds, these dogs require a lot of room to run and much exercise.  A simple walk around the block won’t do for this busy breed.  When bored, the intelligent Border Collie will find something to do, and owners often will not like the choice!  Border Collies have also been known to herd small animals (cats, pocket pets, etc) and children.  The Border Collie does best when it has a job to do.  Many Border Collies excel at agility, fly ball, and Frisbee games.

The rough coated Border Collie has a double coat, which served to protect it while working out in the elements.  This dog should be brushed often to keep matting to a minimum.  The smooth coated Border Collie’s coat is easier to maintain.

This breed’s life span is 10-13 years.  Hip dysplasia and epilepsy are the genetic diseases of primary concern.  Border Collies may also suffer from elbow dysplasia or hypothyroidism.

The very loyal Border Collie makes an excellent pet for the right person.  For more information on the Border Collie, visit www.akc.org.
