Breed Spotlight-Burmese

The Burmese is a highly social breed of cat that is fond of being with people.

The Burmese cat breed was developed in 1930 when a small walnut brown female cat from Burma was brought to America and bred to a Siamese.  Burmese cats come in four colors: sable, champagne, platinum, and blue.  The short, silky coats require very little grooming.  Their eyes are usually yellow or gold in color.  They are vocal like the Siamese, but have softer, sweeter meows.

Burmese cats are very trusting and love spending time with their owners, with an almost dog-like personality.  Because of this, they are not as independent as other breeds and don’t do as well being left alone for long periods of time.  Their playful kitten spirit remains well into adulthood.  Burmese are good with children as well.

Burmese are on the small side, weighing in at 8-13 pounds, and live longer than most purebred cats with the average life span of 16-18 years.
