June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month!

June is adopt a shelter cat month, and Capital Area Humane Society in Hilliard is offering discounted adoption fees on cats and kittens.

Cats and kittens adopted from Capital Area Humane Society are all tested for Feline Leukemia Virus & Feline Immunodeficiency Virus.  They are spayed or neutered, and have been dewormed and treated for fleas.  They have also been vaccinated against rabies and feline distemper (FVRCP).  And the bonus...they are microchipped as well!

When you consider how much everything listed above can be for a new cat or kitten, the adoption fee is well worth it.

When you arrive at Capital Area, you may browse through the cats available on the adoption floor.  Adoption counselors are available to help you find that perfect pet.  As they want to be sure the pet is going to a good home, they will ask you to fill out an adoption application and list a veterinarian as a reference.  They will check to be sure your current or previous pets were spayed/neutered, current on vaccinations, and in general well cared for.

Once you bring your new feline friend home, be sure to give him or her time to acclimate to your home and your family.  If you have other pets, it's best to fix a room up for the first few days or so.  Either a bathroom or spare bedroom works well (avoid the laundry room/utility room due to noise of machines kicking on and off).

Spend time with your new cat to allow him/her to adjust to you, even if it's just sitting nearby, and allow your cat to come to you.  Some cats will be cuddle bugs right away, while others need time to get used to a new home and new people.  Be patient and give your new cat the time and space he needs.

Take your new cat to your vet within a few days of adoption.  This allows your pet to be checked out by someone you trust, and to establish a file for your pet and transfer records from the shelter.

If you're considering adding a cat to your home, be sure to check out available cats at Capital Area Humane Society www.cahs-pets.org.
